If the thought of combining the décor of an old-world steakhouse with the half-light and detached urban cool of a drinks club seems incongruous as best...foolhardy at worst, then Chris Michael's Steakhouse and Lounge in Woodbridge, NJ might be an illuminating and encouraging adventure into the unexpected. Consistently compared to the finest eateries in NYC, this distinct venue is actually the all rage in the area.
One secret to the place's success is the method of this idea integration: the lounge and steakhouse are expertly arranged, making it a perfect place for any type of event from corporate celebrations to weddings. The comforting lighting, the well-spaced tables and access to private rooms lends itself to appeal event planners, too. During fairer climates, there is an outside terrace that is perfect for cocktail parties.
The cuisine is an eclectic blend of Italian, French, and continental American, and the steakhouse chefs use wet aged mid-western, corn-fed USDA prime beef, but it is perhaps the sushi bar that makes for the most interesting culinary statement, with its vast creations utilizing only the freshest fish and vegetables ingredients.
The venue simply cries out for special events, and the most elaborate party they have hosted year to date was their two-year anniversary celebration. The restaurant and lounge were elaborately decorated with ice sculptures and an ice bar and included celebrity guest DJs such as Ted Dillinger, Manny the Greek, and Grammy Award winning DJ and Producer Hex Hector. Guests were also entertained by Samba Dancers, percussionists, and celebrity host Vida Guerra.
The lounge typically markets to an upscale clientele, looking to have a good time without driving to Manhattan or flying out to Las Vegas or Miami. It has been graced with the likes of Linda O, DJ Spinbad and many professional football and baseball players, who dine there on a weekly basis.
The beginning of Chris Michael's was modest. The owner had visited several places and wanted a place of his own. Leveraging 20 years of entertainment and dining experience, he decided to create an atmosphere that is part Miami, part New York and part Vegas.
Look for half-price Thursday nights in the lounge, a budget-conscious fixed menu from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and nightly drink specials, with no cover charge ever in the lounge. Reservations for the steakhouse are highly recommended.
It's rare to find truly new ideas in the restaurant business-rarer still to find them executed deftly. Chris Michael's manages to score on both points.
