A DAY AT THE SPA FOR STATEN ISLAND’S YOUNGEST JET SET.
By Tracey Porpora
Patrons of Spa-Di-Da walk into the Great Kills–based salon to a room filled with plush red velvet pillows and pink accents expecting to receive the traditional spa indulgences, including manicures and pedicures. However, this salon is  unique in that all its customers are 4- to 14-years-old.  “I have three children, and my daughter always wanted to have spa treatments,” explained Lori Menake, Spa-Di-Da’s store manager, who runs the business with her mother, Rae Martinelli, since its inception one year ago. “Every time I would get my nails done, she would tag along. Plus, my kids love to have birthday parties, so I thought to myself, ‘What a great idea to have a spa party center for girls.’”  “We do spa play dates for four or more children,” Menake continues. “They can have the whole place to themselves, and it’s run similar to the way any party is run. The children can get a manicure and pedicure, but we also we have karaoke, which is a great activity for the children. For hair, we can do updos, funky braids, and spray-in color. We can put makeup on them, and we offer crafts and jewelry making. Plus, we have dancing, and for the younger crowd, we play ‘pin the tail on the crown.’” When it comes to birthday parties, Spa-Di-Da offers an array of activities that cater to the girls. “It’s a one-stop party center. You can get a cake through us. We’ll supply the invitations, and we also do the favors,” says Menake, noting that the business has been so successful over the last year she hopes to open more spas in New Jersey and Brooklyn. Parties at Spa-Di-Da aren’t rushed, and there’s virtually no end to the luxury treatment. “For the cake, for instance, we offer the option of gourmet cupcakes on a really nice cupcake stand with sparkling cider in little plastic champagne glasses,” she says. Meanwhile, there is also a room just for adults. “Parents can get comfortable, have pizza and coffee, and sit back and relax. We make it a stress-free party for parents; we do it all for them.” Menake notes that the spa offers party hosts as well, to take some of the pressure off parents. “For a 12-girl party, we offer four hosts,” she says.  And this spa isn’t just for little girls. Boys who desire a funky hairdo complete with colorful hair or even a tattoo are also welcome to enjoy themselves (likely while their little sister or cousin is getting her nails done). “If a girl has a brother or cousin, we have many things for them. Some boys choose to get a manicure, too; we encourage all kids to indulge a little, and we certainly want to remove the stigma of boys not needing pampering. After a long, hard week at school, they also need to relax, and a spa is the perfect place.”
