How One Couple Avoided the Perils and Pitfalls

of Interior Design
For young couples and their families, building a new home can be a very daunting experience. Even the most seasoned homeowners often find the task challenging at best.

Dealing with the never-ending array of choices and possibilities available to the homebuyer is certainly not for the faint hearted. Add to this the fear of making wrong choice-whether it be architectural design, cabinetry or hiring reputable tradesmen-and the dream of building a home often becomes resembles more of a nightmare. Not so for a young couple and their two daughters who purchased a bucolic piece of property facing the pond in Wolf's Pond Park. Annmarie Ruta was hired for the project from Elegant Interior Designs, Inc. and together with husband and wife they began to turn a dream into a reality. "The homeowners wanted their home to be their masterpiece and they took their time making decisions and thinking through every aspect and detail," says Ruta.

A brick and stone façade is highlighted by wonderful rooflines and peaks, which add charm to the majestic exterior. Pavers cover the walkway and driveway, and petite manicured shrubbery highlight the pathway. A combination of window styles with impressive grills and a front porch lined with balustrades serves to emphasize the classic design of the home.

The homeowners had a very formal design idea in mind. Marble was their stone of choice, and they requested the polished material to be featured throughout the home. Impressive cream marble flooring is trimmed with mosaics shine in the graceful entryway and flows directly into the kitchen area; a barrel ceiling defines the foyer leading into the room. A circular staircase, crafted in Brazilian cherry with wrought iron spindles hand rubbed with antique gold, serves as the focal point for this welcoming foyer.

A formal dining room finished with dark mahogany wood, upholstered seating and uniquely designed ceiling molding offers a wonderful space for formal gatherings. The tapestry and sconces add depth and detail to the walls. The living room in enhanced with a complete custom wall unit and fireplace surround. Light maple glazed cabinetry and dark granite countertops can be found in the state of the art kitchen. A large hearth with an oversized mantel speaks of the quality evident in this space. Marble and a mosaic backsplash have an old world appeal juxtaposed to the gleaming modern appliance.

Family rooms are made for families to enjoy, and this room is no different. Although formal in appearance-with a lighted tray ceiling painted in soft blues and copper-the space also beckons with a sense of warmth and serenity. The fireplace is accented with an antique surround in blue glass to match the color palette on the ceiling and the fabric chosen for the sofas. A large vintage style credenza graces the room and again adds old world charm.

"Furniture selection and scaling are always of the utmost importance," offers Ruta. "Pieces chosen in this home are oversized to accommodate the large rooms, dramatic enough for the owner's personal taste and comfortable enough for the family to enjoy."

The main level bath is a combination of contrasting marble in various sizes. The goal was to show creativity in displaying the marble on the tub surround and floor. Rich stones, complimenting borders and combined styling helped achieve the desired dramatic effect. Venetian plaster was applied to the walls and ceiling to add texture and richness to the space. The guest bathroom is elegantly treated with interesting tile patterns and warm wood tone cabinetry.

Intricately detailed mahogany furniture is featured in the master bedroom suite. Custom drapery in sumptuous silks and an oversized oriental rug highlight the opulent furnishings amidst gleaming floors and a wonderful tray ceiling. Particular attention was given to the fine honey onyx selection in the master bath. Curved walls and a magnificent display of tile details create a spa- like setting. The "his" and "her" separate vanities were crafted in aged burl wood. Interesting accent pieces and dramatic silk window treatment with crystal embellishments are glamorous touches in this luxury bath.

The two young girls' bedrooms are each uniquely decorated with pastel themed walls, adorable bedding and fine furniture pieces.

"The children love their rooms and their new home," says the homeowner. "They are truly queens of this castle."

Achieving the right combination of grace and usability is always a challenge in any home design, and we think that Ruta got it just right: an overall lovely abode with just the right amounts of quaintness and charm.
