On a Saturday afternoon I spent an hour listening to classical music, enjoying the soothing sound of running water and examining beautiful artwork. A relaxing day at the spa you may think? A leisurely browse through a New York City museum or art gallery? Good guesses, but you would be wrong. I had a Zen-like, relaxing day at-brace yourself -the dentist.
Now, before you turn the page in disbelief at this statement, hear me out. At Dynamic Dental in Great Kills, you, too, can take part in the experience by simply walking through the door. Dr. Christina Klein and Dr. Diane Klein have created an atmosphere that makes you feel as if going to the dentist is like returning home after a long day's work. From the second you walk through the stained glass doors of their office, you automatically feel comfortable and welcome.
At Dynamic Dental, it is a family affair. Not only are the two partners (informally known to their patients as Dr. C. and Dr. D.) the only sister dentists in practice on Staten Island, but their friendly and courteous staff is like one big family...and the patients become members too.
"We really try to make them feel like family here," says Dr. D.
Dr. C. finishes her sentence, saying, "As patients keep coming in, our family just keeps getting bigger." And, just like family, the patients are dedicated. Some patients who have moved to different parts of the globe continue to arrange their dental visits around the Klein sisters!
As little girls growing up on Staten Island, the Klein sisters knew they wanted to be in a profession that helped people. Dr. C. decided to become a dentist when she was in the seventh grade. Her early interest in the field stemmed from her inspiration: her own dentist, the late Dr. Murray Edelman. She started assisting in dental offices as a young adult, but it wasn't satisfying enough. "I wanted to do what the dentist was doing. I wanted to do more," she recalls.
Dr. D.-long interested in the sciences-knew as a child she wanted her profession to be in either medicine or dentistry. Encouraged by her sister's success, she decided to follow that path as well, and began the process of becoming a dentist. They both attended St. Joseph Hill Academy High School and Wagner College, and then continued their education at NYU's College of Dentistry.
Today, the sisters are a team; they perform all of their own dental work and the patients see them from the beginning of appointments through to the end of treatment.
"As dentists, we don't just look at people's mouths. We see each patient as a complete person," says Dr. D.
Dynamic Dental offers not only routine and family care, but also cosmetic dentistry such as Invisalign-invisible braces which the doctors report can completely transform a person and boost his or her confidence. They also offer Diagnodent, a diagnostic laser that detects cavities and scans teeth for hidden decay.
The Klein sisters also consider themselves artists. They were born-as Dr. C. playfully quips-"with a paintbrush in our hands." Their artwork (as well as that of their mother), is displayed proudly throughout the office. Eager to strike a balance between art and science, dentistry seemed a natural and obvious choice.
"When we create smiles, we're being artistic," says Dr. D. She says that creative talent boosts business because they look at things from a different and unique perspective.
"The patient is receiving the latest and the best care with our creativity included."
The Klein sisters are very active in and around Staten Island through various charities. They contribute to St. Jude's Children's Hospital and Give Back a Smile (an organization that helps women who are battered obtain free dental makeovers from participating dentists). They are also actively involved in educating children around Staten Island about proper dental hygiene. February is Children's Dental Health Month, so they have been spending a lot of time visiting schools and teaching children how important oral health is and how it affects the body. In fact, children who are patients of Dynamic Dental get a crown (not the dental kind, of course!) on their very first visit and the opportunity to plunder for goodies in the treasure chest after the completion of a well-behaved visit!
All you have to do is browse through their "Gratitude Journal" to see all the cards and letters sent from happy patients thanking them for all of their consideration and the care taken to provide a comfortable and stress-free experience. These letters come from small children coming to the dentist for the first time all the way to adults, who may have harbored a long-standing fear of going to the dentist and now actually look forward to it.
"We've been able to take dentistry from something people feared to a spa-like experience," says Dr. D.
