When a Paul Mitchell Partner School, called The Academy NYC of Cosmetology & Esthetics, launched its new cosmetology program in New Dorp earlier this year, many students rushed to be among the first to enroll. These first set of students, known as Future Professionals, will graduate in December, after completing 1,000 hours of class and clinic time, as required New York State's cosmetology curriculum.
Tyciana Stephens, 30, was one of those students who registered early at The Academy; and she will be in the first graduating class. She was unhappy with her former career as a make-up artist-decided on a career change-and she is now learning to do something she loves.
"My experience has been absolutely amazing," says Stephens. As a student of the relatively young school, she has learned the basics of hair design, and she is thrilled with the experience she is acquiring by interacting with guests who patronize the clinic.
Such confidence, which will lead to success in the cosmetology industry, is the driving force behind the learning environment and culture at the Paul Mitchell School says director and co-owner, Anne Bennett.
"Our students are happy," says Bennett. So are the parents who are pleased with the careers the students have chosen. However, students are not the only ones benefiting. Guest enjoy a full menu of services while paying reduced rates for the latest beauty styles.
Learning Leaders-who guide and oversee the work of the Future Professionals-put guests who are apprehensive about getting beauty services in a school at ease. An added bonus is the professional salon look in the state-of-the art facility, which enhances guest experiences.
In keeping with The Academy NYC's fun ambiance, Anne and her husband and partner, Frank Bennett, decided to pump up the volume at The Academy by adding live music to the environment. On Saturdays, DJ Cutmaster spins classic disco to the latest popular tunes. Guests-from kids sipping on iced chocolate drinks to adults who spend a few hours on multiple services-enjoy their day and, frequently forget they are in a school. Clinic hours have also recently been extended to Thursday evenings from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.
Since opening in May, the Academy has enhanced its' effort to give more students the opportunity to realize their dreams by adding an evening program to the day schedule. New sessions commence every six weeks and applicants must be at least 16 years of age with a high school diploma, and a desire to work in the beauty industry. Such students have mentors and weekly guest speakers who share their knowledge while being supportive and encouraging. The students also volunteer in community activities as well as events such as fashion shows that highlight their talents.
Graduating Future Professional Stephens says that the Academy, "has been one of the best experiences in my life, and I'm glad to be a part of the first class."
