Dance club legend Moby returns this summer with a new disc...and a new twist

Given that the average career span of a musical club sensation can be measured with an egg timer-if not an eye blink-Moby's enduring success is nothing short of astonishing. A staple on DJ turntables and dance clubs throughout the country and around the world for that matter, his electro-synth, pulsating yet melodious tracks continue to be among the genre's most infectious. Those who aren't diehard fans might be most familiar with his album Play, released in 1999. After wobbly sales figures at the outset, Play went on to sell over 9 million copies worldwide, and every single track on the album was licensed to one film or another. His music has been described as everything from haunting to thrilling and everything in between; some of the former characteristics may come from Moby's Christian faith, which he has been unashamedly declaring (even in the agnostic-meets-atheist world of music) since the mid-90s.

Though by any measure wealthy, Moby continues to live in a small apartment in Little Italy, and until recently continued to wait tables in the tea restaurant across the street he was part owner of.

His latest album (as yet untitled) is due for release in June or July, and promises to be something of a departure from the driving house beats people familiar with him might be expecting. In a November 2008, interview Moby said that "I want to make a really emotional, beautiful record. I don't know if I will succeed, but my goal is to make something very personal, very melodic, very beautiful."

Clubs may be crestfallen at the thought of a quieter, more lyrical Moby, but we'll take him any way we can get him.
